Ripples of imagination in the enchanted waters of Pendle Hill

dave spellman

This summer project evolved from the dry cobbled lands and alleyways of Clitheroe, in the Ribble Valley, Lancashire, UK. I was led to the flowing waters of nearby brooks, becks and streams coming off the western slopes of Pendle Hill. The waters flow from tiny springs that appear, with a gentle trickle, but water is also spat out with force at times. They then play hide and seek. Sometimes the waters are herded into culverts, marshalled to work over centuries past, then more recently reclaimed as nature reserves. The histories of these waterways go way back to ancient times and are surrounded with mystery, folklore and fairy tales. I was gradually drawn further and further upstream, into and under the water, over and under bridges into the darker, shaded watery places.

The intention is to engage the imagination, lean in and look closer, see what might be out of shot, in the corner of your eye as well as what is in front of you. Rediscover some mystery and the enchantment that surrounds these waterways. Experience the haunted and haunting waters, go further upstream..
